Internet Thanks

So, I just asked people on Twitter what I should write this blog about because frankly I don't write often enough. I am taking the first three responses and instead of talking about one of them I am going to attempt to talk about all of them (kinda).

The @Replies I received:

@chudleycannons: David Foster Wallace and Dan Brown took the same Creative Writing course in Amherst. And... go!

@Mlinthicum: Thanksgiving!!!

@chudleycannons: Joss Whedon and Michael Bay both studied film at Wesleyan around the same time. And... go!

I won't talk about the actually Thanksgiving holiday because it isn't close enough. I will discuss the concept of thanks. I am thankful for a lot of stuff so I won't list all of it. Instead, I rather discuss the a few things mentioned in the other tweet replies. Before I got on YouTube I had no idea who David Foster Wallace was. He wrote the much acclaimed and long (1079 pages long) book Infinite Jest. Once I get through a few of the many unread books on the shelf behind me I plan on picking this monster up.

The same fact applies to Joss Whedon. I had no idea who he was at all. In case you don't know he made the awesomeness that is Firefly, Dr. Horrible, and Dollhouse (and Buffy and Angel but I've never watched). I actually watched Dr. Horrible before I knew who he was and i didn't realize he was in charge of Dollhouse until the second episode. Either way he is awesome.

I am thankful that I know all of this. Not because knowledge is cool (which it totally is) but because of how I know it. Since my internet social life began I have mainly met awesome intelligent people. People that read critically and make me read critically. Heck, people on the internet are why I only asked for books last Christmas. We are all pretty similar. To find so many nerds who all enjoy similar stuff is awesome. I am glad we watch a lot of the same movies and shows. I watched Firefly, Dr. Who, and Battlestar Galactica all because of friendships created online. I have read tons of books suggested to me by people online. These people have had a huge influence in my daily activities and who I am now.

So, thanks to my friends I've made online and thanks to the one's I've made offline. You are both the reason I am writing this.
